My story

Please contact Paul Slebzak (pauls@luckydoganimalrescue.org) for more information about this pet.sweet girl ISO fresh start and love! ROXIE NEEDS A FOREVER HOME!!!! Come meet Roxie and other great adoptable dogs this Sunday (05/04) from 12-3 pm at the PetSmart in Alexandria, VA (3351 Richmond Hwy, Alexandria, VA 22305)!   Name: Roxie        Best Guess for Breed: Shepherd and lab mix  Best Guess for Age:  6.5 years as of February 2025     Gender:  FemaleApproximate Weight:  58 lbs Gets Along With: Roxie needs to go to a home with another dog. We haven't seen her with cats or kids, but we are happy to discuss integration techniques with any potential adopters! Currently Living At: DC area foster home Special Adoption Considerations: Because Roxie is shy, she needs to go to a home with a confident, welcoming resident dog who will show her the ropes.  Roxie is Looking For: Her forever home! This super sweetie loves walks and exploring and being out and about with her humans. AND - she's way out of the puppy yips and as a wise, experienced dog knows what's most important in life: Being safe and loved and under her own roof. That's right at the top of her wish list. In exchange she promises adoring gazes and loyal companionship for all her days. At 60 pounds, that's a pretty huggable snuggle buddy and a solid presence by your side. How about it?  What My Foster Says About Me: Roxie has been doing great. She is such a love! Just a really sweet and quiet girl! She LOVES exploring and going on hikes! She does great meeting new people and quickly velcros to those offering treats or head scratches! She gets along great with our resident pup too but generally chooses solo time to play with all of the toys she can find at once or curl up by herself with a good chew bone! She hasn’t had any accidents and knows to go outside in the yard or on walks. She is coming out of her shell but does still get scared around loud noises so a quiet home environment would be her ideal. She is food motivated and eager to please so an ideal candidate for training!Dog's Day Out Program on 2/10:  I took Roxie out for a bit today - we walked around H St a little, and then took a trip to Alethia Tanner Park, where I laid out a picnic blanket and to soak in the beautiful sunny day! Roxie took a second to settle, but once she did, she seemed very content to lay down and bask in the sun. The sound of the Metro kept piquing her interest, but she'd lay her head back down once it passed. She's a super sweet, very calm girl. Once she sat down, she didn't react to any of the people/dogs/cars passing. While we walked, an ambulance drove past and she howled along with it (she's helping!), which was so funny! Unfortunately I didn't catch that on video, but it was too cute! I think she's a cuddler at heart! As we sat in the park, she laid between my legs and even rested her head on my leg at one point.    Medical: Roxie is heartworm positive, but this Lucky Dog got extra lucky! This pup is part of a groundbreaking study we are conducting at our South Carolina Rescue Campus that has the potential to change the way shelters across the United States treat heartworm positive dogs.  All dogs in the study are placed at random in either the 2 shot or 3 shot protocol with strictly monitored protocols in place. Four weeks following their final injection, the pups are eligible to transport to the DC area for placement in foster or adoptive care.  After treatment concludes, we work with adopters to arrange a free follow up heartworm test after 6 months, followed by a second test at 9 months. Roxie has completed the treatment and activity restriction phase and is now awaiting her six month follow up test.  Lucky Dog cannot guarantee any dog is housebroken.  All of our dogs are working on their crate training.  TO ADOPT: The adoption fee for this dog is $475, which includes the cost of routine vetting, including vaccinations, spay/neuter, and heartworm treatment.  If you are interested in adopting, please complete the Adoption Questionnaire online at bit.ly/adoptaluckydog Lucky Dog Animal Rescue does our best to provide accurate information about the dogs we have for adoption. That said, we cannot make any guarantees about age, breed or temperament.  Thank you for contacting Lucky Dog Animal Rescue and helping to save a life!
