My story

Meet his high-spirited, lovable, charming, sweet boy I have named Bowser. He is an American Pit/American Staffordshire terrier mix. He was picked up as a stray by one of our officers on 2/1. Yes, you read that correctly—do the math and you will realize he has been at the shelter 6 1/2 months and counting. Bowser weighs 56 pounds and is about 1 1/2 years old. He is neutered. Bowser arrived at the shelter, seemingly well cared for with a shiny coat, bright eyes, and a healthy weight. We expected his owners would come rushing to the shelter to reclaim. Well unfortunately, that did not happen and so Bowser has made his home for over half a year confined to a kennel in a city shelter. Now about Bowser. He walks nicely on a leash. He is crazy about toys and is very playful. During the evaluation/photo session, he went from toy to toy playing with each one, throwing it in the air and munching away. This playful pup is friendly and a-OK with receiving loving attention. He does not seem to know any commands. He has taken his prolonged residency at the shelter in stride and is a confident and outgoing boy. However, that is not to say that he’s not “chomping at the bit” to go home with his new people. He needs an active family or person who will give him daily playtime, exercise, and enrichment. He is a smart boy, and I have no doubt he could easily learn some commands. As a volunteer, I pass by his kennel multiple times each day I am at the shelter and it breaks my heart to see his adorable little face looking up at me, pleading with me to take him out and play with him.
