Meet Mackinaw! Mackinaw was found as a stray near FFF and taken to Carlsbad Shelter, so his family could find him. Unfortunately, he wasn't claimed, so on January 18th, we scooped him up to become a Frosted Face. He is about 10 years old, weighs 58 lbs., and is a total sweetheart. Just days after his arrival, Mackinaw was chosen to live in a Foster home. We are so happy this sweet boy is getting lots of love and pampering - while we learn all about him! His Foster Mom reports: "Mackinaw is a very sweet, loving dog with a lot of energy for his age. He wags his tail more than any dog I’ve ever seen! Mackinaw gets along with all dogs. Even if a dog barks at him when we are on a walk, he just ignores them. Whenever he sees a dog walking towards him, he always wags his tail, but stays calm. I have taken him to a dog park and a dog beach and he did great! He loved meeting all the new people and new dogs. He is great with kids! Mackinaw loves food! It doesn’t really matter what type, this boy just loves to eat. He is on a little bit of a diet though, in hopes that less weight will make walking easier on his hind legs. His appetite makes it easy to give him his medication. He has no food aggression, he's just food motivated. Mackinaw is fine when he’s home alone and does not seem to have separation anxiety. I’ve monitored him on camera while I’m at work all day, and he mostly sleeps. I have never heard him bark or whine. I think Mackinaw was probably an outside dog and never house-trained. He had a few accidents the first week I had him, but he’s completely house-trained now! Mackinaw really likes to follow his person around and be involved in everything. He is learning boundaries and will benefit from some training so he understands how to give space when it’s needed! Mackinaw has a hard time settling down sometimes, but he’s always sweet as can be. He loves attention and just wants to be petted and cuddled. Mackinaw rides well in the car but needs to be buckled up or else he tries to get up front. Mackinaw loves to go on walks and actually has a ton of energy! I haven’t walked him more than about a mile because he seems to be a little arthritic, but he really enjoys getting out and about. He does not pull on the leash at all. This good boy has a lot of love to give and a lot of life left in him. If you meet him, you will fall in love!" At the end of March, Mackinaw had a herniated disk and had to have emergency surgery on his spine. He is making amazing progress and is walking again! (See video.) Mackinaw is such a sweet, special boy and so deserving of the most loving home for the rest of his years. Could it be with you?
