My story

Meet Humphrey – A Survivor with a Heart Full of Love Humphrey has endured more than any dog ever should, but through it all, he’s held onto his joyful spirit and gentle heart. From the moment we met him, it was clear he wasn’t just a dog who had survived—he was a dog who was ready to live. He came to us dragging a heavy toe chain, a heartbreaking sign of the life he’d left behind. And just when he started to feel safe again in his foster home, the unthinkable happened. Humphrey slipped out of the yard and, while approaching a neighbor with his usual friendly energy—tail wagging, eyes bright—he was shot in the face. His foster ran after him, shouting that he was friendly, but it was too late. Miraculously, Humphrey survived. And even more miraculously, he forgave. Over time, and with the care of a dedicated foster, he began to heal not just physically, but emotionally. Today, he’s not just surviving—he’s thriving. In his foster home, Humphrey has blossomed into the dog he was always meant to be. He’s goofy and affectionate, with a contagious zest for life. He absolutely lights up around other dogs and has formed strong, playful bonds with his foster siblings. Whether he’s learning how to play gently, sharing space, or snuggling in a pile with his dog friends, Humphrey is always happiest when he’s part of the group. He loves outings, thrives in social settings, and has shown nothing but friendliness in public. He’s crate trained, food motivated, and continues to soak up everything his foster family teaches him. He’s even been slowly introduced to cats and chickens and is doing well with thoughtful guidance. What Humphrey needs now is a forever home with another friendly, confident dog who can help continue to show him the world is safe and full of love. He would thrive in a home where he’s included in the family’s everyday life—where he can tag along on adventures, nap on the couch, and be reminded daily that he is wanted and cherished. Humphrey is strong, sweet, and endlessly forgiving. He’s ready to leave the past behind and finally know what it means to be truly home. Adoption is $275, which includes spay/neuter at our vet, vaccines, dewormer, microchip, and clean bill of health. Although we work to potty train all of our dogs, we cannot guarantee full house training before adoption. Regression is a normal part of transitioning to a new home.
