This is Patrick. We received a call about a cat who had been abandoned by his family and that he was wounded, or they thought he was. Thankfully Patrick wasn't but he was pretty grubby looking and just looked so (understandably) sad. We did all the usual tests and while his fecal came out (surprisingly) negative, his bloodwork indicated he has Feline immunodeficiency virus (FIV). This is a virus specific to the cat family. It is similar to HIV (human immunodeficiency virus, the cause of AIDS in people) in that it attacks and weakens the immune system and there is no cure. FIV positive cats can live a good life. Owners just need to ensure the pet has a healthy lifestyle and is fed a high-quality diet, combined with twice-yearly examinations (including blood and urine tests) to monitor immune status. Patrick is a pretty laid back kitty, gets along with cats at the rescue center, and enjoys lounging around. We'd love to see this sweet boy find a great home....like all homeless pets, Patrick deserves the love and attention from a doting human for the rest of his days. He absolutely can live a good, long life with proper care and nutrition. ##2106417##
