Elvis ACCT-A-168396 is an 8-month-old male who animal protection officers brought in as a stray on 7/6. APO's noted "Dog was afraid and growling but was easy to leash and fine once on leash. Scared. Will shy away and growl. But is fine once leashed." Behavior Notes: Per staff on 7/12: Got Elvis out for some one on one time to see how he's doing! In kennel he was on his bed and watched me with soft yes. I opened the door and crouched down, using a baby voice to call him over. He would come up and sniff my hand nervously, but whenever I moved the leash he would bounce back backwards back onto his bed and create space. He did this a couple times, and then I decided to lasso him. He did a bit of leash dodging but I leashed him quickly, and he came right out once secured. In the room I gave him some space to relax, but he jumped right into my lap looking for some attention. He was a little nervous of me petting down his back, and head whipped around to watch my hand, but never escalated. I offered him some treats and he took them surprisingly gently! I thought with how skinny he is he'd snatch them right up! After some treats Elvis sniffed around the room and explored a bit, but came right back and hopped into my lap for more cuddles! Elvis is a cuddle bug at heart! He was much more comfortable with all over pets at this point, and leaned into my lap happily. He liked the left side of his neck scratched, and kicked his leg! He let me pet under his chin without any issue as well! We played for a bit with some toys, and Elvis showed me he likes soft toys best, especially if they squeak! He wasn't super interested in rubber squeakers. He traded for a new toy or treats easily, but was snatchy with toys so watch your fingers! He enjoyed tug and shaking the toys in his mouth. He greeted another staff member that walked in the room by excitedly running up to them with a wagging tail and hopping up on them! He seems to be improving so much and opening up a lot more! When it was time to return to kennel he hopped right in without any issue! It's great to see him opening up so much!! On 7/9 staff noted: "Elvis is a great dog. Yes he'll bark at you but just pat the ground and he'll come over. Elvis is just a little shy and scared. Give him a minute and he'll warm up and be the happiest guy around total lapdog total cuddle bug such a sweetheart. On 7/7 during a behavior evaluation staff noted: "Elvis was in kennel, hard barking, baring teeth, lunging and head whipping.. very frantic once he saw the handler and the leash. The handler had to lasso him but he kept whipping it off his head and air snapping. Pulls minimally on leash. Elvis came into the eval room very neutral but with a wagging tail. He was offered treats (cheese) to warm him up to pets which he took with force, being very snatchy and very interested in finding more.. searching around. He did allow pets for awhile but then would get stiff, lip lick or air snap. Elvis seems very conflicted with certain areas of his body being touched and tenses up -- letting you know he's uncomfortable while remaining tolerate. He warmed up and allowed more handling, seeming to tolerate more pets without reacting. Engages in play, interested but does not take possession of toys. Medical Notes: On 7/8 during an intake exam staff noted: Elvis had a body condition score of 3, his ears were waxy and he had some scars on his face. Staff were unable to look at his mouth/teeth. Elvis was noted to to be bright, alert, responsive and friendly.
