My story

Hi… my name is Freddy. I’m just over three years old, and if you’re reading this, I’m hoping—really hoping—you might be the person who finally takes me home. You see, I’ve been waiting for a long time. I don’t remember much about being a tiny puppy, except that I was picked up as a stray. I guess nobody came looking for me. I started out at a rescue that mostly helped smaller dogs, and well… I didn’t stay small for long. I kept growing and growing (and growing!) until it was clear I needed a new place that could handle a big guy like me. That’s how I ended up here at Central Arizona Animal Rescue. I’ve been here for over two and a half years now. That’s almost my whole life. At first, everyone thought I might be some kind of shepherd mix. But then I just kept getting taller and bigger and stronger. These days, they’re pretty sure I’ve got some Great Dane in me. I don’t exactly know what that means—but I do know it means I’m big, I’m goofy, and sometimes I forget just how strong I am. One of my very favorite things in the world is playing ball. If you’ve got one, I’m your guy. I’ll chase it, bring it back (most of the time), and be ready to go again before you’ve even caught your breath. When it’s hot outside—because, well, Arizona—I love sitting right in my water tub. Not next to it. Not near it. In it. It cools me down and makes me feel pretty happy. I like other dogs too… as long as they respect my food. I’ve spent most of my life making sure I keep what’s mine, so I just need a little space around mealtime. That’s okay, right? We all have our boundaries. People, though? I love people. I get so excited I’ll sneak up behind you and slide right between your legs. It’s kind of my thing! But… I should probably warn you—I’m big enough that if you’re not ready, I might just lift you up a little without meaning to. I promise I’m not trying to knock you over. I’m just really, really happy to see you. I don’t bark much. Actually, I’m pretty quiet most of the time. So if I do bark, you might want to listen—I usually have a good reason. Now, I’ll be honest with you about something. I’ve lived my whole life in a kennel. I’ve never been part of a family, never lived in a house, never had my own bed in someone’s room. So I have some things to learn. I might not understand all the “rules” right away. And sometimes, if I get bored, I might chew on things I shouldn’t. Strong chew toys? Those would be amazing. I do know how to walk on a leash, but I’m strong. Like… really strong. So I’ll need someone who can guide me and show me the way, instead of the other way around. With a little patience and consistency, I know I can learn. I want to learn. I’m already neutered, up to date on all my vaccinations, and I even have a microchip—so I’m completely ready to go home. I just need someone to say yes. If you’ve got room in your life for a big, loving, slightly clumsy, water-loving, ball-chasing guy… I promise I’ll give you my whole heart. Maybe for the first time ever, I can finally know what it feels like to belong. If you think that might be you, please email mike@caaronline.org to set up a time to meet me. I’ll be waiting. PLEASE e-mail (do not call) mike@caaronline.org for more information and to set up an appointment to adopt. Do not e-mail us with a request to call you, if you have a question, please ask in the e-mail.   All dogs are adopted on a first come - first served basis.
