My story

NOTE: THIS IS A COURTESY POST FOR A DOG THAT IS NOT WITH GERMAN SHEPHERD RESCUE OF SACRAMENTO VALLEY. PLEASE SEE THE CONTACT INFO FOR DAKOTA AT THE BOTTOM OF THE PROFILE BELOW. "Dakota" is a beautiful 70-lb, 6½-yo solid black spayed female GSD who is driven, active and lovable. Dakota is great with people of all ages, both at large and at home. She loves kids and enjoys having them throw her toys for her to fetch. Dakota is a mixed bag with other dogs. She does fine with some dogs at dog parks and not so well with others. She is OK when other dogs visit for a day, but becomes territorial if they stay beyond a day. She was fine visiting the female Lab at her person's boyfriend's house until they moved in together; then, conflicts started to develop and only worsened over time. Dakota will likely be fine with male dogs (including small male dogs) but we will not consider her for a home with a female dog. Dakota has a high prey drive and is NOT good with cats. Dakota is fully housetrained. She has received formal obedience training and obeys numerous commands, including sit, down, lie down, come, heel, walk, wait, shake, and go to your place (crate). Dakota walks excellent on leash, staying focused on her handler. She is not reactive to other dogs that she sees on walks. She is a calm traveler in a car and loves to go for rides. Dakota absolutely loves swimming. Once she’s in the water it’s difficult to get her to come out! She loves playing with her rubber ball and she will go for hours playing with it. She also loves any toy with a squeaker and she loves to be chased. Dakota is in great health but does have slight urinary incontinence, which is fully controlled by the twice/wk administration of a drug by called diethylstilbestrol (DES). A 30-tablet bottle of 1mg DES costs about $40 at Dakota's vet, or about $13/month. Dakota's person raised her from a 3-month old puppy. Though Dakota is clearly a huge part of her person's life, the conflicts between Dakota and her person's boyfriend's dog have forced the decision to rehome Dakota, since she is the aggressor. Dakota is now in a foster home in Pinole. A young woman who is a Vet Tech at Animal Care Clinic in El Sobrante has assumed responsibility for Dakota. Dakota is located in Pinole. A rehoming fee of $100 is required. For more info about Dakota and to schedule an appt to meet her, please contact Genesis Flota at either genesisflota@gmail.com or 510-837-8769.

If you have any questions or would like to adopt Dakota, please reach out to the adoption group directly. PetSmart Charities does not facilitate the adoption process. Thank you.
