Welty (named after her foster's favourite writer, Eudora Welty) is one heckuva special Dalmation. Rescued from a hoarding situation and then the shelter, we knew Welty was a diamond in the Ruff, and oh boy, has she dazzled us! When Welty first stepped paw into a real home instead of a scary shelter cage, she was hesitant and scared of everything. She cowered from loving hands and ran away from everyone she met. After a few short days of love and routine, however, Welty has proved that she is ready to be somebody's dream dog! Welty is, above all, a sweet, sweet soul. She loves to sit next to you on the couch and gaze into your eyes, then (not so subtly) leans into you with all her body weight until she eventually can't play coy anymore and flops right into your lap. She loves to rest her face in your hands, and be pet and snuggled til the cows come home. Welty can be initially afraid of men (she will cover or run away), but she eventually warms up. However, Welty LOVES women, which has earned her the nickname of "Welty the Galmation" in foster care. Inside, Welty is extremely well behaved. She makes a fuss when you first put her in her crate, but settles down after about 10 minutes. She has not been given free run of the home while in foster, but if she's bored, Welty will pace around looking for stimulation, which may tempt her to tear blankets or get into trouble if left unsupervised. However, Welty absolutely LIGHTS UP around other dogs. She's met many dogs in foster care, and she loves to show them just how fun dalmations really are. Welty is still young, so her play style is perfect for a dog who likes energetic chasing and wrestling. She would probably do better with dogs over 20 pounds, as she can get rowdy and might accidentally step on teeny tiny dogs! If Welty is an only dog, she will need an active owner who is home most of the day to keep boredom out of the picture. Like most Dalmatians, Welty is not a Netflix, nap and chill dog, but more of a " let's kiss and then wrestle and then kiss more" kinda girl. She gets lots of walking each day in foster care, plus lots of indoor play with other dogs in her foster home. Welty initially pulled on leash, mostly out of fear, but with leash training, has improved greatly. Her adopters should be willing to continue to work with her on the leash. Welty learns incredibly fast. She came to us with no commands, but has already learned her name, sit, and shake a paw. She does great head tilts when you skype with her (everyone who meets Welty requests a few , and she'll do really well in a home that understands her intellectual, as well as her exercise needs. Our Welty isn't the kind of dog who wants to hang in the background, but if you looked as good in black and white as she does, neither would you!! However, she is an absolute dream dog with a special, sweet little soul, and she'll make the perfect dog for somebody who wants to spend most of their days alongside their dog. Welty's absolute dream life would be with a human who loves kissing and a dog sibling who loves to chase and wrestle. She hasn't been kid tested and has not shown any aggression, but because she can startle easily, a home with respectful, older children would be best. If you're looking for a dalmation who's ready to give you a 101% of her heart while snuggling and watching the L word, contact us to meet Welty via email adopt@covetedcanines.org or fill out an application online at: covetedcanines.org/application
