She is a very smallish Shepherd mix, about age one-and-a-half, and weighing about 30 lbs. She may be mixed with some type of Whippet or Collie type. She was rescued from the Hesperia Animal Shelter in the high desert. She was on the thin side, but has recently become more consistent with eating her meals, and is also now taking treats. Willow is very shy and submissive (with humans) yet approaches people to say hello and get pets, often following the other dogs’ leads. Part of her shyness could be due to lack of exposure and being under-socialized; part of it could be due to inherent genetics. However, there is not one aggressive bone in her body, and all of her fears have very submissive behavioral manifestations, like being afraid of the leash when it is first brought out and she sees it (possibly she was hit with a leash?), being afraid to go through doorways, unsure of what people expect of her until she knows the routine, etc. She is comfortable in the world of dogs, however, and pulls her confidence from the other dogs in the pack. The other dogs help her to come out of her shell and be more confident to take on new things. Overall, Willow is a VERY sweet dog, very affectionate and loving. Note that ONCE THE LEASH IS ON (preferably using a harness) Willow enjoy her walks. Willow wants so badly to love and be loved. She is initially hesitant, yet wants so much love from people at the same time. She was very sad in the shelter as she most likely had unfortunate beginnings, but comes out of her shell more and more daily, and now looks forward to a great and happy forever home where she can flourish and be the secure, great dog she was born to be. Willow enjoys the yard and likes to have yard access but be able to come back into the house at free will. She is crate-trained and potty-trained (however potty reinforcement is needed in any new environment) and is absolutely great in her crate anytime that I need her to go in for whatever reason, also, at night for sleeping time, and she enjoys her rawhide as a bedtime snack. She is not initially a playful dog, but as she gets comfortable with the other dogs and her environment, a playful side comes out (though she is just not overly enthusiastic about puppy energy overbearingly barking in her face to play ALL of the time). Willow also enjoys her crate and just being on her own, for some space and relaxation, but also loves to be near her people and be attention-seeking too. Willow will only be adopted if there is an already existing and accepting canine buddy waiting for her in her new home – no exceptions. She seems to in particular have a closer affinity and attraction to the male dogs, about her size or smaller and little dogs. Confident, gregarious and playful little dogs truly help Willow feel in her element. A home with a yard is also a must. No apartments as that lifestyle she is not ready for. I need a home where she can come out of her shell at her own pace and roam around a bit at free will and take on outdoors activities slowly. NOTE: We only adopt dogs as primarily INDOOR dogs. Dogs can go outside to play, potty, to sun themselves at will, but should never be excluded to an outside area. You do not need to give a dog the run of the entire house, and an appropriate sized wire crate works very well during a transitional phase.
