** $40 in pledges for any rescue that pulls ** Gaia ACCT-A-172351 is currently considered urgent and at risk of euthanasia due to length of stay and lack of space for incoming dogs. Gaia must have confirmed placement with a RESCUE PARTNER or ADOPTER by THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 26TH at 10AM. Should Gaia's medical or behavioral status change, her urgency and timeline for placement may also change. Meet Gaia, a playful and loving Shar-Pei mix who is hoping for a one way ticket out of the shelter! True to her breed, Gaia can seem shy at first but she's sure to warm up with treats and plenty of cuddles! Found as a stray on 8/23, Gaia's finder described her as Friendly, Cuddly, Quiet, "Calm, Teddy Bear, Sweet Eyes. She is dealing with some skin issues that are typical to her breed and will likely require ongoing management, so potential adopters should be prepared to get her established with their vet to come up with a treatment plan. Gaia has had good dog meets while at the shelter and is open to meeting other dogs. She was adopted for a few hours, but returned after decompression was not followed and she was reactive to their resident cat. Any introductions to cats would need to be taken very slowly. Adopters should also be familiar with Shar-Peis or willing to do the research necessary to give her the breed-specific care she needs. Due to her length of stay at the shelter, Gaia is urgently seeking placement with a rescue partner or adopter. BEHAVIOR: Per Volunteer 9/8: Such a sweet girl!! She's in the ISO area since she has a URI. She was super easy to leash and greeted me with a wiggly loose body. Outside we ran into a staff member who she got pets from and took scratches from all over, such an affectionate gal! Took pets from me all over. She was very jumpy! It was pretty gentle but she loved having her paws up on me for pets so maybe would be better with older/taller kids. Seemed to like romping around, moderate energy and playful girl with toys! Took treats nicely from me and knew sit! 8/28 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION: KNOWN HISTORY: Stray KENNEL PRESENTATION: Gaia was on the front half of her kennel for cleaning. She was laying against the door and sat up with wide whale eyes when I called her. She was very nervous, but sniffed me nicely through the bars. WHen I reached in with the leash she tried to move her head away, and continued to give whale eye, but I was able to leash her easily, and she came right out. LEASH SKILLS: Pulls minimally, showed a lot of fear walking through kennels; tail tucked, body low, eyes wide. HANDLING: At first Gaia took some space and time to sniff around and adjust. I offered her treats but she wasn't interested and kept her distance. After a few minutes she came up to me on her own and jumped right into my lap. She allowed some all over pets, but she was still tense so I pushed her down. She stayed close and leaned hard into my legs, so I gave her some more pets. Gaia allowed all handling with no issues, and would lean in harder and harder as time went on. She got very cuddly and affectionate, and was seeking comfort in me. Two people walked in and she greeted them very nicely, with tucked tail wags and gentle sniffs. With time she started taking treats as well, and took them nice and gentle! Her tail came untucked and she gave mid level wags for treats and attention. Overall, Gaia needs a few minutes to sniff around and adjust, but after that she is a cuddly, affectionate girl! PLAY No interest TOYS: No interest Per Staff 8/28: Sweet girl, playful but mostly just wanted to cuddle and get pets while obtaining a PCR, she was great while getting the PCR barely any restraint needed. Per Staff 8/28: Gaia was very sweet for the exam and allowed most all handling. I didn't examine a few things as thoroughly as I would have wanted to bc she shied away; she probably would have been fine with more restraint but I didn't feel it was necessary to stress her out. Pet Volunteer 8/25: Excited to see other dogs. Very sweet. Did not want to return to kennel. Per Volunteer 8/24: Very strong, sweet. MEDICAL: On 8/28, Gaia was diagnosed with an upper respiratory infection (URI) or "doggy cold" and prescribed 2 weeks of doxycycline. She tested positive for Pneumovirus and Coronavirus. When she completed her medication, she still had symptoms, so her course of doxycycline was extended and enrofloxacin was added. Upon being retested on 9/13, she was negative for Pneumovirus, but positive for Canine Herpesvirus and Mycoplasma. 8/24 Vet Exam: Pt is sweet! Bar. Coat is diffusely thin and flaky. Some pyoderma present. Bilateral ear infections Eyes: nsf ou, no entropion observed(Pt appears to be part Sharpei) Ears: Bilateral inflammation and yellowish brown discharge that likely has bacterial component Integument: Diffusely thin and flaky coat, no evidence of fleas. Patches of pyoderma around neck and on ventral thorax, ventral abdomen looks clear. Musculoskeletal: Thin overall, ambulatory x4 Assessment: Pt likely has chronic skin issues, atopic dermatitis. Presently has secondary pyoderma and ear infections Plan: Will start courses of Cefpodoxime, Apoquel and hydroxyzine. Did not receive Vectra at intake, gave Nexgard instead. Recheck skin in 1 week. May need to give Cytopoint if current Tx not helping. Pt is not eligible for foster due to medical. Placing med waiver for adoption. Any adopter will need to follow up with vet. Once Gaia gets on a management medication that is successful, she won't be as high maintenance, but that sometimes requires at least several vet visits to get to that point. 8/23 Intake Exam: Eyes - clear Ears - red, irritated, inflamed Nose - clear Mouth/Teeth/Gums - pink white moist Coat & Skin - red, irritated, inflamed skin all over, possibly skin allergy Urogenital - female intact VIDEOS: Gaia knows sit: https://www.youtube.com/shorts/QyqBmkoj_t8?feature=share Cuddling Gaia: https://www.youtube.com/shorts/4uin-vfpC_o?feature=share Gaia and Jabba: https://www.youtube.com/shorts/RWISTVO-PIo?feature=share Stone and Gaia: https://www.youtube.com/shorts/_7sSGhXCBtM?feature=share Gilbert and Gaia: https://youtu.be/YWVbLOnKBsA https://youtube.com/shorts/zXqm8E8ZL_k?si=U8y2ZuuyWpaV97n_ https://youtube.com/shorts/TNuVT2dFAgA?si=2x6uMtr5wuvqvIpN Due to being significantly overcapacity with animals and higher than usual intake, extensions are unlikely to be granted.
