Princess Tawny, a sweet and shy pup, was brought to the shelter on August 5th by a landlord who initially claimed she had been abandoned in a rental property with two other dogs. However, it was later discovered that the finder was actually her owner, who no longer wished to reclaim her. Despite the confusion and stress of her situation, Princess Tawny has made tremendous strides since arriving at the shelter and has begun to blossom. Initially, she was very nervous, trembling and hesitant to move when approached. But with time, patience, and gentle handling, she has started to come out of her shell. Princess Tawny now walks with purpose when outside, enjoys pets, and has even shown some energy in the play yard, engaging in slow runs and showing interest in toys. Although she still needs time to fully relax, she has had good dog meets, demonstrating her potential to be a wonderful companion in the right environment. This beautiful girl, with her stunning coloring and shiny coat, is looking for a quiet, understanding home where she can continue to bloom. Due to her nervousness, she would do best in a home with children aged 12 and up. Princess Tawny needs a place of comfort where she can feel safe and loved, allowing her to fully come into her own as the gentle, affectionate dog she truly is. If you're willing to provide her with the patience and care she needs, Princess Tawny will reward you with loyalty and love. In the yard she was super sweet and affectionate! She even did the little agility run. She sits very nicely for you and takes treats super nice! The whole time she was walked really well on leash with minimal pulling. *NEW* Per volunteer on 8/31: Accompanied another volunteer for some outside time with Princess Tawny. She is a super sweet girl who can get easily lost in the sea of dozens and dozens of other dogs here. Her profile is so true -- this sweet girl has really blossomed! She's very laid back (even shy at times) in her kennel but was easy to leash and jumped right out of her kennel. She pulled a bit on the leash leaving the building - likely excited by the opportunity for outside time but overall was low to mid-level energy. She enjoyed some sniffs around the run and then leaned in for lots of pets and booty scratches. We quickly discovered that she loves toys and managed to fit two plush squeaker toys in her mouth! Then it was on to the big ducky toy for a game of tug. She would engage with me with the toy and then take it over to my fellow volunteer so she could take a turn and play tug too. She loved all of the attention and especially my roast beef treats, which she took very politely. She knows "sit" and being treat motivated would likely pick up other commands quickly. We took a walk around to the Welcome Center where she saw Opal in his kennel. Our time there was brief but she appeared interested and non-reactive. Then it was back inside and she jumped right into her kennel (with her new toys of course!) Before I left last night I checked in on her and she was curled up asleep on her bed with her ducky toy! Per Volunteer Aug 19 I went to visit Princess Tawney in her ISO kennel. She was on her bed, and when I opened the kennel door, she was slow to get up. I gave her some pets as I leashed her, and we walked outside. We walked to the ISO yard, and as I walked the perimeter of the yard, she followed along side, sometimes stopping to investigate a smell, then resuming our walk. It was close to closing so I couldn't stay long. I wanted to give her some fresh air and I want her to continue to feel comfortable about people, since she was so shy when she first arrived. I returned her to her kennel with no issue. I added some wet food to her dry food hoping she'd eat it. Per Volunteer 8/8: I wanted to take her outside, again, to see if she was feeling less nervous. When I opened her kennel she was laying down and shaking. I was able to leash her and offered her treats, which she didn't want, but she very slowly lowered each foot onto the floor. Once out she walks with a purpose, still nervous and scared, but she does shake-off a lot. In the yard, she showed me she had some energy and did some slow running. Still no interest in toys, but I was glad to see she had perked up. I had to help her into her surgical kennel again - still reluctant to return to it. I am hoping she'll soon be moved into a proper kennel. Maybe with more time out, she'll become less nervous. Per staff 8/8: KENNEL PRESENTATION: Princess Tawny is currently being housed in a side bank kennel due to space. She was laying near the door with wide, scared eyes. She did not move when I opened the door, and allowed me to leash her with no issue. It took her a couple minutes to get the confidence to leave the kennel. She laid there trembling and would lip lick when I tried petting her. SHe came out on her own with some coaxing and baby voice. LEASH SKILLS: Pulls minimally HANDLING: Princess Tawny was nervous in the room with us. I offered her treats to help her open up and she took them very gently. She allowed some pets but cowered away at first. When I pulled away she pushed in closer, so she's a little conflicted. WIth some more time and treats she began to really relax, and stopped trembling. She would come when called and walked around with a mid level wagging tail. She leaned in hard for pets and allowed all handling, but was sensitive around her ears. They look pretty crusty and infected, so I'm sure they're painful. She would lip licked when I touched them, but did not escalate. PLAY: Engaged in play TOYS: She got very excited when I showed her a toy. She stiffened up a bit when my hands were near her toy, and she was hesitant to trade for a treat. She ultimately made a good decision and decided to trade and did not guard. Per Volunteer 8/7: Princess Tawney is in a lower surgical kennel and we wanted to make sure she got outside time. When we opened her door, she was shaking but we were able to leash her. Then she wouldn't move o matter offering her treats, or coaxing. We decided to pull her bedding with her sliding along to get her out of the kennel. She didn't fight us, and once on all 4's she stood and walked - she didn't hesitate at any of the noise or other kennels, but you could see she was uncomfortable. She passed 2 volunteers and did crouch down a bit, but then stood and gave herself a good shake-off. She sets a nice walking pace, minimal pulling. In the yard, I just let her wander and smell. She followed me to the bench and came to me with her head down to get pets. She likes butt scratches, and several times she came over to me, walked under my knees while I was sitting, then stood for pets. She is a beautiful dog, a tad overweight and has a gorgeous coloring on her face and a shiny luscious coat. She had no interest in toys. She had a brief thru the fence meet with Major. We had to lift her into the kennel b/c she didn't want to return - can't blame her. Per staff 8/6: Very shy but sweet, takes treats gently, go slow ACCT Philly is located at 111 West Hunting Park Ave in Philadelphia. We are open for adoptions 7 days a week.
