Her name may be Penny, but this girl is worth a million bucks! Penny is the wiggliest and sweetest of ladies. She loves getting pets and giving kisses, and will greet you with sooo many tail wags. This is Penny's second visit at ACCT Philly, but she's hoping the second time's the charm when it comes to finding her fur-ever home! Penny is an almost 6 year old female pittie mix who originally came to ACCT back in 2019 as a stray. Her charming nature found her an adopter quickly, but sadly Penny returned to us in 2024 due to her owner's busy work schedule. At just 40 pounds, Penny is just the right size for city life but will make herself right at home wherever she is loved and cared for. Penny has done well meeting other dogs here at the shelter too! Sadly, Penny has once again been waiting in her kennel for someone to choose her. Now, Penny must urgently find placement with an adopter, foster parent, or rescue partner by May 20th. Please read through Penny's notes below and come meet her at ACCT Philly any day from 10am to 6pm! Penny was surrendered to the shelter on April 22nd. Her owner described her as a "good, friendly, loving dog" who is both housebroken and crate trained! Penny shared her home with two adults and an 11-year-old child. The owners said she has a high energy level, and responds to many commands including lay down, stop, come here, sit, and stay. Penny's owners noted she is not great with dogs until she has some time to get to know them, so all dog introductions should be taken slowly. When asked what type of home they'd recommend for Penny, they said: "she needs a person that has the time to spend with her - loves to be with people." Here at the shelter, staff and volunteers have had many positive experiences with Penny while on their daily walks! Overall, they noted that Penny had a low to medium energy level, and showed no mouthiness, jumping up, or leash issues. Check out their walk notes below: "Sweet! Likes short walks." "Super wiggly and sweet." "Doesn't like returning [to kennel]." "She did well!" A volunteer noted on 5/17: "Penny was so enthusiastic to see me! Her tail was wagging! Passing other kennels Penny jumped toward every other dog. Outside Penny enjoyed running a mile with me and is easy on a leash. She seems housetrained. When Penny saw other dogs in the run outside she ran along the fence barking with a wagging tail. Her fur is so soft!" Staff noted on 4/30: "Penny got out to stretch her legs today, but she ended up not feeling very well. She was easy to leash in kennel and came right out, but as we were walking out of the building she threw up a little bile. We went outside to the yard and she wandered off to sniff and go potty. She wasn't responsive to toys or me calling her, and she just seemed much lower energy than her usual self. After a few minutes she hung out by the gate and start hacking and wheezing, so I decided to bring her back inside and put in a vet check for her. Poor Penny sounds like she's getting sick! She didn't want to go back into kennel but she went in when I stepped in with her. I hope she feels better soon!" A volunteer noted on 4/24: "Penny was so excited to get out of her kennel to spend time with me. I loved her enthusiasm. Passing other dogs seemed to frighten Penny. She walked by other dogs with a lot of anxiety. Once outside she was happy to run for a few minutes. Penny walked with me around the block (a mile) but I had to carry her after a few adorable sploots along the route. She didn't mind being carried at all. Penny loved sitting with me. She appreciated pets and affirmations of what a good girl she is." A volunteer noted on 4/24: "Super sweet and excited lil lady! She tried dashing out the kennel door as soon as I opened it slightly for leashing lol she was very excited for the walk. Outside she was super well behaved and sooo affectionate. She knows sit and takes treats very gently! She loves treats! Super wiggly girl, loved her!" Staff noted on 4/23: "When I came up to Penny's kennel she was on the other side panting and screaming, appearing very stressed. I called to her and she came to my side wagging. She allowed me to easily leash her and exited without issue. Needed some coaxing when going into the kennel but returned without issue. Pulls Moderately On Leash. Loose/Allows all handling. IN the room Penny was very stressed. She was pacing around whining and panting heavily. She would not take treats and had a tough time calming herself down. Toys would work for her to self soothe with at times but as more time went on she lost interest in them. She allowed all handling and would lean in at times but remained very very stressed out and began to stress mount as well. No interest in play she was too stressed. Accepts a trade for toys. Uses toys to self soothe her stress, accepted trades without issue." On 4/23 Penny was noted to be very stressed an anxious in her kennel. On 4/23 during her initial intake exam, Penny was noted to have slight yellow staining on teeth but otherwise bright, alert, responsive, super playful pup energy. Penny also has some behavioral notes from her shelter stay in 2019! Penny's original finder noted that she got along well with their cat, and added that Penny was sweet and playful with some pulling on her leash. A volunteer noted that she was "easily leashed and exited kennel. Minimal pulling but did pull towards other dogs. Sat calmly and laid in the shade. Allows all handling, very wiggly, gave kisses, and sat on lap. No interest in tag games or toys at this time." If you are a rescue interested in pulling this animal, please email our lifesaving team, or visit here if you are not currently a rescue partner: https://acctphilly.org/acct-philly-love-local-partnership-program/ Due to being significantly overcapacity with dogs and cats and higher than usual intake, extensions are unlikely to be granted. If you are interested in an animal please contact ACCT Philly immediately. Due to limited space, timestamps may also be proceeded with early so it is imperative to let us know if you are considering adopting or tagging a dog or cat. Confirmed placement is considered a confirmation of an actual rescue pull. Possible placement, interested parties, and other "TBD" statuses are not considered confirmed and do not indicate an animal is no longer urgent. All animals at ACCT Philly are from Philadelphia, as the only open-intake animal shelter in Philadelphia, we are not able to accept animals from outside of Philadelphia. ACCT Philly's Pennsylvania kennel license number is 08313.
