** $50 in pledges to the rescue that pulls ** Marvelous ACCT-A-159160 is a 5-year-old female who came in as a stray on 3/6, abandoned inside the front sliding doors of the shelter. During her stay, Marvelous has exhibited elevated levels of fear, anxiety, and stress - growling, hissing, and swatting especially in reaction to her cage door being opened and closed and movements near her kennel. She strongly prefers the litterbox-side of her kennel and tends not to freely move back and forth through the portal. Thanks to dedicated efforts from staff to repeatedly visit with her, and offer treats during calm and peaceful times, she is slowly and steadily calming down after initial stressors at a quicker pace than she was at first. Marvelous would benefit from more sustained one-on-one attention in order to help her further along her journey toward confidence and security. Behavior notes: Per Staff on 5/6: LET A STAFF MEMBER BOOP HER NOSE! Marvelous was distracted by a purple churro on her lower lip. The staff did immediately retract her hand because Marvelous' pupils grew super quickly but this is so much progress. She has been retreating to the back/covered side of the kennel since she scratched a staff. Per staff on 4/20, "Was having a bit of a morning - for whatever reason Marvelous doesn't like to stay behind the covered part of the kennel. All morning she's been at the front of the kennel, hissing whenever anyone kneeled and swiping. She has started to follow through a bit. The first time she did it to me, I knelt sideways and waited until she calmed down and threw her a few treats. I repeated the second time I walked by and she did better and calmed down more quickly. When doing a meet with the cat above her I noticed she was sitting and fixating on the bag of treats, so I threw her some treats to encourage her. Per staff on 4/5, "Marvelous had been having a day all day today. Was lounging near the front of her litter-box side, and would hiss and growl the second anyone looked at her. She did swipe at me when I kneeled, but didn't get up to follow through. I would pause until she calmed down, then move on. When we had a quieter moment later in the kennel, I took a chance with some chicken-flavored delectables. I stuck it through the bar and she jumped up to a sit, but didn't growl or get offended. I think she recognized the packaging/treat type. She would sniff it, but wouldn't eat it. She relaxed a lot though, giving me lip licks and slow blinks. I put some on the bar and walked away to give her a chance to eat in peace. When I came back later she didn't eat it, but had relaxed a bit and settled more. Definitely a cat that needs a slow approach. Per staff on 3/22, "Marvelous was in her main kennel today, fairly relaxed near the back. I first threw her some treats, which she sniffed at but did not eat. She also tracked a toy. Initially lip licked when I jiggled the kennel door handle, then hissed and low growled. I kept jiggling the door handle, and she settled within the minute. I left it at that since it's progress. Per staff on 3/16, "Tried to spend some time with Marvelous today - her pupils were dilated and she was huddled next to her litterbox. She hissed as soon as she saw me reach for the kennel door, and continued to low growl and hiss intermittently. Did not escalate - I threw her a few treats which she did not sniff or interact with. I continued to reach for the kennel door without opening it until she started to calm down, which took about 5 minutes. During a sedated intake exam on 3/10, staff found marvelous to be in good general health and already spayed. During an attempted exam on 3/8, " Marvelous presents with tense body, ears back, eyes dilated and growling. Per staff on 3/7, "Marvelous became fractious when trying to pet and restrain to take out of kennel for intake exam. Started to hiss and growl. Approached with a tongue depressor to see how she would react. She swatted and lunged. Scheduled on gabapentin.
