MAGGIE (Smooth Coated Border Collie) - AVAILABLE!!!!! Only $45 My adoption profiles tend to be long & very detailed. Please read the ENTIRE Adoption Profile (all the way to the FAQ) so you understand everything about this dog & if you are a good match for her. Maggie has been bounced around a lot, so we want to make absolutely sure she is a perfect fit for her next home. Maggie was originally left abandoned outside the admissions office at a shelter when she was 6 months old. While at the shelter she was fearful, avoidant, and handling sensitive, and that landed her on their euthanasia list. That is when Safe Haven stepped in. We networked Maggie and put her up for adoption through our E-list Adoption Program. She was adopted to a great home, but the resident dog was not happy about having a new puppy full of energy in the house. Maggies' new Dad did everything he could to help his current dog accept her. He hired a trainer and worked for months at it. But as time went on, the resident dog starting attacking Maggie, and the tension between the dogs just grew. So Maggie was turned in to Safe Haven and went up for Regular Adoption. She then found a home with several cats. The testing we did with her with cats showed she was, in general, good with them. But if they ran around, she wanted to chase. The adopter thought that that could be worked with & adopted her. Only to find that her wanting to chase the cats got more intense, so she returned her to Safe Haven. The 3rd home that she was adopted to had another energetic dog that they wanted a playmate for. She was the same size as Maggie, and at the meet & greet, the 2 ended up getting along great & played pretty much the whole time we were there. The 2 were the best of friends, and then as time went by, Maggie started getting possessive of her Mom, & the 2 dogs got into a couple scuffles. Which resulted in her being returned again. This last home (the 4th!), finally seemed like a good fit. The woman said she was a jogger and very active, Maggie was to be the only pet, and at the meet and greet Maggie just loved everyone! But her Mom just contacted us and said she wanted to return Maggie because she switched jobs and wasn't home as much and Maggie has become inconvenient. Poor Maggie... Maggie is actually good with other dogs, she has just started guarding resources with other dogs (people, food, toys...). But she would be good to still take to the dog park, on hikes, etc... She is already playing with the dogs here. Her favorite dogs are Parker, Mandi, and Sally. Maggie is a sweetheart. She is VERY energetic so she will need an active family. She would be EXCELLENT with agility training or a hiking partner. She loves to chase her football and bring it back to you. So she might even be a great dog for the lure course. This dog deserves a wonderful home and lots of love and attention. She is a complete sweetheart and a loyal companion. She always has a smile on her face. Her last family said she had started giving them "hugs" when asked. Maggie was listed as a Lab/Siberian Husky at the shelter. But I think she looks most like a Smooth Coated Border Collie (she acts like one too...). I think the shelter listed her as a Husky because she has the most gorgeous blue eyes. But many breeds have blue eyes. Including the Border Collie. Maggie is easy to fall in love with and very intelligent. She knows "Sit", "No", "Down", "Outside", & to "Heal". She usually does best with these commands with a reward, but she does sit on walks when asked to at the end of the block. Birthday: 1/5/17 Weight at last Vet visit: 40 lbs. (this weight was when she was still a puppy. She is bigger now. I'll try to get a new weight when I can) Cats: No, she chases them. She can actually be around them if they are laying around and mellow, but if they move to fast, her instinct to chase kicks in. If she gets excited around them (perks up, barks), she will listen to correction and stop if you catch her at a low level of excitement. But if she gets totally amped up she will chase them and get so overly excited that there is no calming her down except to remove her from the situation. Small Dogs: Friendly and wants to sniff and play with them. She has played with a dog as small as 5 lbs at the dog park. Maggie is a great dog park dog, but we ask that she be the only dog in the home because she guards her resources (people, food, toys) with other dogs. Large Dogs: She has met many dogs bigger than her at the dog park and she gets along great with them. She gets super excited to run around and play with them and will stomp her feet in excitement and do the play bow. But we ask that she be the only dog in the home because she guards her resources (people, food, toys) with other dogs. Guarding resources is an advanced issue. If someone wanted to adopt her that has another dog, the dog would have to be submissive, & everyone in the home would need to be knowledgeable of a dogs body language & knowledgeable on working with a dog in a positive but consistent manner. They would need to recognize & correct her guarding at level 1 before it goes any further. They would also need to not allow, and be consistent with, correcting any guarding of people. This is hard to find people who know how to do this. Let alone everyone in the family if there is more than 1 person in the house...So therefore I am listing her as having to be the only dog in the house. Kids: She LOVES kids! She has met kids around the age of 10 yrs old at the dog park, and she lived with a 7 yr old and a 4 yr old in her last home. She will knock down younger kids though if you do not exercise her and she builds up a bunch of pent up energy.... Men: Great with men. Affectionate and loving. Women: Great with the women. Affectionate and loving. Strangers: She barks and jumps up sometimes when people have come to the house, but just from excitement of meeting a new person. She loves people & is friendly with new people. Food: She's a great eater and has eaten everything that has been given to her. I feed all the dogs on a rotational diet. Which means they get a different brand of high quality food each month. I do this because I do not think that one brand can provide all the nutrients that they need. Just like one food can't provide us with all that we need...Plus, who wants to eat the same thing every day? All dogs are fed breakfast (6 am) & dinner (5 pm), & are trained to eat out of their own bowl. She gets 1 cup for breakfast and again for dinner for a total of 2 cups of dry food a day. I also fill a Kong in the morning with part of her breakfast & seal it off with pumpkin or canned food, then freeze it & give it to her as an afternoon snack. Crate Trained: Yes, she goes in when asked ("Inside"), and will hold it until you let her out. Most of the time you don't even have to ask her to go inside, she will just do it automatically because she knows the schedule... Maggie is in a large 28" x 48" wire crate. All my foster dogs are crated at night and when I am not home. First thing in the morning she is more interested in greeting me than going outside to do her business, so I have to tell her "outside", which she will do, lol. I don't think she would need to be crated once she is the only pet in the home as long as you get all of her energy out. House Trained: Yes, she uses a doggy door Leash Trained: She loves to go for walks and gets excited when she sees you get the leash out. She will heal if given a shorter lead. A longer lead and she does have tendency to want to explore and chase after birds when she sees them. She has also been trained to sit at the end of the block before crossing the street. She is a high energy breed (Border Collie) so she would need a MINIMUM of 30 minutes a day of exercise, but would be happier & better behaved with an hour or more. The more you can exercise her the better! It would be great if you exercised her through a variety of different things such as walks, dog park, agility or lure course, playing fetch, jogging...She needs someone who will be REALLY active with her! Car: She will load up when you prompt her to. She's pretty good in a car & will sit there and look out the window. If you leave her in the car, she will jump in the drivers seat. Other issues: None, she's wonderful! She's even prettier in person! You will usually find more pictures & videos of the pets there too!https://www.facebook.com/groups/1405138936478168/ ADOPTING A CAT OR DOG IS UP TO A 20 YEAR COMMITMENT! THEY ARE NOT OBJECTS THAT YOU CAN GET RID OF WHEN THEY BECOME INCONVENIENT. THEY ARE INNOCENT LIVING, BREATHING ANIMALS WITH FEELINGS THAT DEPEND ON YOU TO TAKE CARE OF THEM. IF YOU ARE NOT WILLING TO TAKE CARE OF, LOVE, & PAY FOR EVERYTHING THIS PET NEEDS FOR UP TO 20 YEARS, THEN PLEASE DO NOT ASK FOR AN APPLICATION. * Safe Haven STRONGLY believes that collars should only be used as decoration or to hold the ID tag. If you are trying to restrain your dog, it can easily slip out of a collar. Also, attaching a leash to a collar puts pressure on the neck, which is one of the most sensitive areas of the body, & could hurt them. For these reasons, Safe Haven includes a harness with every dog adoption to ensure the safety of the dog. A harness distributes the weight on the chest & shoulders. It also has a handle on the back that you can grab if need be, without hurting your pet (EX: Dog falls off your boat, just grab the handle & pull your pet back in with no harm done. With a collar, you would have to strangle your dog when pulling your dog in). Also, it is very hard for a dog to slip out of a harness when properly fitted. So it is much easier to restrain them. FAQ: Q: Is this pet still available? A: Status of each pet is posted in the original post on the Facebook page for Safe Haven Animal Rescue of AZ athttps://www.facebook.com/groups/1405138936478168/ . It will say the status in ALL CAPS at the very top of the pets post, and updates are posted in the comment section of each pets post. Once on the Facebook page, type the pets name in the search box in the upper right corner to easily pull up all the posts on that pet. Q: Why are your adoption fees so low? A: Safe Haven does things very differently than other rescues do. If you look at our other pets up for adoption, and also our past adoptions, you'll see that ALL our prices are low. We do this because it generates a lot of interest, and gets the pets adopted quickly. The more that get adopted, the more we can rescue. We only deal with pets in danger of being euthanized. The whole point is to save as many lives as possible! We are all about the animals here. And if you want to add a donation to the adoption price to show appreciation for all the hard work we do, then please indicate that in your application! Q: I don't see a phone #. Will someone please call me? A: Everything needed is online. I have found that online is the most efficient way to get all the work done. In the past, when I posted my #, my phone rang off the hook all day. So I spent the whole day on the phone, with not much work to show for it at the end of the day. Again, everything needed is online. Q: How do I adopt this pet? A: Your first step is to fill out an application. http://www.adoptapet.com/Safe-Haven/adoption-application/ Q: Can I adopt if I live out of state? A: Out of state adoptions are welcome. Additional fee applies. Fees start at $195 for transport + the adoption fee. All transported pets come with a collar with ID attached, harness, and leash. Plus all the other things listed above that regularly come with adoptions. If it is a long trip, they may come with a carrier with padding, health certificate, bowls, and of course food for the trip. It just depends on the pet, and the mode of transportation. Feel free to e-mail Safe_Haven_Animal_Rescue@live.com and tell me what dog you are interested in and your address, so I can give you a more exact quote. Q: Where is this pet? A: This pet is being fostered in a private home. Q: I like what you are doing & would like to help. Would you be open to a partnership? A: Absolutely! I am open to anything that helps care for the animals &/or saves more lives! Please e-mail me at Safe_Haven_Animal_Rescue@live.com and give me details about what you have in mind. Q: Can I sponsor a specific pet? A; Absolutely!
