My story

Jeki's story is one of heartbreak, resilience, and hope. He was one of sixteen dogs rescued from the Yeongyang Shelter in South Korea after they were placed on the euthanasia list. At first, the rescue was only meant to save two dogs-Jeki and his friend, Ato. They had spent their lives confined to small kennels, never feeling warm sunshine on their faces. The thought of leaving them behind was unbearable. As more people learned about their situation, kindness spread. What began as a mission to save two precious lives became a rescue of all sixteen dogs. Of them all, Jeki was the most frightened. He was terrified of people and would run away whenever anyone came near. During his first winter after rescue, every dog needed a warm padded jacket to survive the freezing temperatures, but Jeki was so fearful that no one could safely touch him. The only time he ever wore a jacket that winter was while he was under anesthesia for his neuter surgery. Even then, beneath all that fear, there was always a gentle soul. Before everything changed, Jeki was quietly curious. He would often be the first dog to cautiously approach volunteers, watching from a safe distance before taking a few brave steps forward. It was a small sign that part of him wanted to believe people could be kind. Then tragedy struck. While living in a large shelter after his rescue, Jeki was attacked by other dogs. The injuries to one of his eyes were so severe that it became painfully swollen and could not be saved. Surgeons had no choice but to remove it. The attack stole much of the confidence Jeki had worked so hard to build. Once again, he became afraid-not only of other dogs, but of people too. Thankfully, Jeki was moved to a quieter shelter where he could finally begin to heal. With patient caregivers, gentle training, and countless small acts of kindness, he slowly learned that not every hand would hurt him. Today, Jeki has found his courage again. He isn't the kind of dog who rushes up to greet strangers, and that's perfectly okay. He prefers to watch quietly from a distance first. When he decides you're safe, he'll come closer on his own. His trust isn't given freely-it is earned. And because of that, it is incredibly special. Jeki is a calm, thoughtful companion who gets along well with other dogs, always respecting their space and appreciating friends who do the same. He's never demanding or pushy. One thing he has never lost is his love of food. Mealtime is his favorite part of the day. He gets excited for every meal but always waits politely, never competing or arguing with the other dogs. Jeki is also the kind of dog whose love grows slowly. He may not steal your heart the moment you meet him. Instead, one day you'll look over and realize he's quietly become your shadow. He's lying beside your chair while you read. Walking peacefully next to you on your favorite trail. Watching you with his one bright eye, completely content just to be near you. Those are the moments I imagine for Jeki. Nothing extraordinary. Just a family to love, peaceful walks, afternoons in the sunshine, a favorite chew treat, and a safe place to rest his head at the end of each day. Fourteen of the sixteen dogs rescued from Yeongyang Shelter have already found loving homes. Only two remain. Jeki and Ato-the very two dogs whose lives inspired the rescue in the first place-are still waiting. Jeki has waited far too long. Not because he isn't wonderful, but because shy dogs are so often overlooked. He has survived fear, loss, and unimaginable hardship, yet he has never lost his gentle heart. Jeki would thrive as the only dog in a quiet home where he could finally enjoy all the love for himself. He could also happily share a home with a calm, respectful dog who would give him the space he needs.
