My story

Paul is a young Australian Shepherd mix who is still learning how to feel safe in the world. At around one year old and 42 pounds, he is bright, treat-motivated and eager to learn. He already knows sit, takes treats gently and loves going for walks. His finder also crate-trained him and reported that he was not destructive in the crate or when left loose inside the home. Paul can be hesitant with unfamiliar people, but once he trusts someone, his playful and affectionate side comes out. He needs people who will let him approach at his own pace and understand that reaching over him, moving suddenly near him or pushing physical affection before he is ready can make him feel threatened. With patient handling, treats and clear routines, he has repeatedly shown that he can settle, redirect and engage with the people around him. While he has not been tested around cats, Paul's inquisitive nature and puppy energy suggest he would need someone experienced with very slow cat-dog introductions and in-home boundary training. Likewise, Paul can be selective about the types of dog personalities he chooses to befriend, and so he will need an especially slow and experienced dog-dog introduction process. The combination of puppy energy and heavier weight also means Paul would be safest in a home with responsible, older children and adults. Pauls best fit would be a calm home with someone willing to continue building his confidence through positive-reinforcement training. He is not looking for someone to fix him overnight. He needs someone who can give a young, uncertain dog the time and guidance he should have received from the beginningand help him become the good dog he is already trying to be. Please visit our website www.rescuestreet.com to learn more about this amazing pet and to see other available dogs and cats.

If you have any questions or would like to adopt Paul, please reach out to the adoption group directly. PetSmart Charities does not facilitate the adoption process. Thank you.
